medical history —
• “... and I've spent the last month in Infirmary getting her physically ready. She's protected against cholera and typhoid and anything else that was extant in 1320, which, by the way, the plague you are so worried over wasn't. ... I've removed her appendix and augmented her immune system. I've given her full-spectrum antivirals ... ” (pg 10)
- all happened... pretty much a week before her arrival
• a small recording device resembling a bone spur implanted "against the palmar surface of the scaphoid bone"; hand not specified - left?
• “Miss Engle has had full-spectrum antivirals and T-cell enhancement. She would not be at risk, would she?” (pg 68)
• Something wrong. He had not meant the fix. He had meant that something was wrong with him. He was how old? Kivrin's age? They had begun giving routine rhinovirus antivirals nearly twenty years ago. It was entirely possible that when he'd said he'd never been ill, he meant he'd never had so much as a cold.
Dunworthy looked out the window at the rainy night. "I remember feeling odd," he had said. Not ill. Odd. Someone who'd never had a cold wouldn't know what to make of a fever or chills. He would only have known something was wrong ...
medieval influenza —
• origin: archeological dig on a knight's tomb (circa 1318)

- “It's an H9N2.”
- “He's utterly convinced the virus came through from the past. He's drawn up charts of the cyclical mutation patterns of Type A myxoviruses. According to them, one of the Type A myxoviruses extant in 1318-19 was an H9N2.”
• cure: not mentioned in canon other than "an analogue"
rough timeline of novel —
• 22 Dec 2054, Oxford → depart
• 13 Dec 1348, Oxfordshire-Bath Road / Ashencote Village → arrive; illness
• 15 Dec 1348 → bedridden; language breakthrough with contemps
• 18 Dec 1348 → relapse; pneumonia?, fever back up
• 19 Dec 1348 → "I can take three to four breaths without coughing ...", returned appetite, able to make it downstairs for supper
• 20 Dec 1348 → "I'm nearly completely well." Enhanced immune system kicks in, can take a breath without it hurting, cough gone, wound on forehead healed.
